wine wednesday: mulled wine

It’s that time of year people! There’s a chill in the air, more lights are strung around town, maybe you’ve enjoyed the first snowfall.

Ok ok, so maybe parking lots are giving you more anxiety than normal and trips to the grocery store take infinitely longer–seriously where do all these people come from?! But semi-stress factors aside, this is my favorite time of year. And you know what makes it that much better??


Preferably shared with friends, but perfectly acceptable sipped alone.

It couldn’t be easier to make and if you keep the essentials all winter long, you can brew up a cup in 15 minutes.

mulled wine 

serves 4 or a generous 2

1 bottle fruity red (Zins, Cab Sauvs and Syrahs are best)

1 cup apple cider (unfiltered is best!)

2 oranges

1 lemon

1 pomegranate

2-4 cinnamon sticks

2 handfuls clove

fresh ginger

honey (optional)

In a large pot add wine, apple cider and cinnamon sticks. Poke one orange with cloves and place entire orange in pot. Cut a few slices of orange and lemon and add to pot. Next, carefully cut pomegranate and add a quarter to the pot as well. Eat a few seeds! Finally, grate some fresh ginger over entire mixture.

Once all ingredients are set, set stove to med-low and simmer until ideal temperature. Add desired amount of honey to slightly sweeten.

Serve in mugs and garnish with cinnamon sticks and orange slice from mixture.

Repeat as necessary!

TIP: Make this ahead and it can be stored for up to 4 days. Just reheat!
