bites of life: september

And just like that, we’re more than a week into October. Before it’s too far gone, here were some of my September highlights:

sweet: cake at proof bakery

img_0604

This cake, known as “Gateau de Savoie” or commonly “the sponge cake with the whipped cream and blackberries” is heaven sent. Yes-yes, I do have a big sweet tooth so I do deem a lot of sweets amazing, BUT this takes the cake. Literally. It’s so damn light I felt like I was floating after I finished. Ok, maybe that was the combined caffeine and sugar buzz-but, if a slice is available snatch it immediately. Thank me later. @ProofBakeryLA

savory: Sen Chan Pen Pu, aka #18 at sapp coffee shop

img_1116

Upon recommendation from my noodle-expert friend, Emily (@FoodLoversDiary) I made my way to Sapp Coffee Shop to try their famous noodles. She suggested the “Sen Chan Pen Pu” stir-fried noodles and I went to TOWN. The dish is so simple but flavorful AF: rice noodles, garlic, chili, egg and crab meat. Squeeze a little lime, request extra cilantro and all of your needs can go “bye-bye”.

drink: topo chico

img_1134

Behold the next big thing in sparkling water, Topo Chico. And by next big thing I mean, this stuff is gaining popularity nearly as fast as LaCroix. AND it’s been around longer, since 1895 #hechoenmexico. I had my first while working a restaurant pop-up. The chef “popped” one of these open for me and I was hooked. Feeding my sparkling water addiction one bottle at a time!

HOLY $h*T, need to go back stat. As I mentioned above, their #18 was my favorite savory bite this month, but their #23 Drunken Noodles (flat noodles with ground beef, chili and garlic) came in close second. Yes, I ordered two noodle dishes all to myself. Sue me. The leftovers were- dare I say it- even better. Next up I’ll go for the Jade and Boat noodles, which are famed and Anthony Bourdain approved.

entertainment: the infinity mirrored room at the Broad, lA

fullsizerender-2 img_1118

This wasn’t my first time in the Infinity Mirrored Room, but it was my first solo trip. Last time I was in artist Yayoi Kusama’s piece was here. And I have to say, second time around was just as infatuating and breath-taking. My tip: get to The Broad at a decently early hour to enter your name in the queue, see the upstairs exhibit and at the end of your trip, ask kindly to enter the line early. No winking necessary 😉

Hope your October is already off to a great start…please send fall weather to LA!

the buzz: summer tv

Let me introduce “the buzz” (I know, I know you want to get to my summer TV picks already…go ahead and scroll) but for those of you still reading-yay-this series will highlight two things:

  1. a fun coffee sleeve from a local coffee shop
  2. an even more fun buzz-worthy topic

COFFEE SLEEVE: Alfred Coffee

I happened upon Alfred one of my first weeks in LA. I had never been to Melrose Place, home of the OG location, and fell in love with the street. Alfred has now taken LA by storm, I feel like they are announcing a new location every week (props guys!) but its Melrose Place location still remains my favorite. My GO-TO: almond milk cap topped with cinnamon.

SUMMER TV:

Ah summer TV, even more indulgent than a winter binge because you’re saying “f*ck it” to the sun and staying in-unless you get yourself a summer thunderstorm-aka the best excuse to hole up and watch a new show. So without further ado:

unREAL (Lifetime, Season 2, June 6th) For those of you who are too proud to watch unREAL because it’s a “Lifetime” show, get off your high horse and watch Constance Zimmer and Shiri Appleby kick ass. I was never a fan of the Bachelor(ette) but this scripted show focuses on the bts craziness it takes to produce reality TV. MUST WATCH.

Feed the Beast (AMC, Series Premiere, June 5th) When the billboards started popping up in LA, I was like “is that David Schwimmer?!” The answer is “yes”, and 2016 is proving to be his year. Admittedly I haven’t watched the pilot, though it’s sitting in my queue, but since Mad Men, AMC hasn’t let us down. Here’s looking at you, Ross.

Chef’s Table (Netflix, Season 2, May 27th) I am late to the game on this show, I know, and for someone who loves food as much as I do, how did I miss this? PLUS season 1 just nabbed a James Beard award-so both seasons are lined up- along with a big charcuterie board when viewing.

Animal Kingdom (TNT, Series Premiere, June 14th) Based on the Australian film by the same name, Animal Kingdom is a gritty family-crime drama with Ellen Barkin as the lead. Ellen freaking Barkin. I’d say no more, but John Wells is also behind this show (Shameless, ER) making me want it to be June 14th already.

Wrecked (TBS, Series Premiere, June 14th) I read this script a couple months ago and can’t wait to see how it looks. It’s a survival-comedy about a group of strangers who crash land on a remote island. Think “if Lost had been a comedy and not so confusing”.

Another Period (Comedy Central, Season 2, June 15th) Basically I want to live on this show. Natasha Leggero and Riki Lindhome can do no wrong. Dubbed “America’s Worst Family”, the two play sisters in turn-of-the-century Rhode Island. Lots of awesome cameos.

OITNB (Netflix, Season 4, June 17th) So much has happened on this show’s last couple seasons I don’t even remember where we left off- but I know it was juicy. All the women slay on this show, although I hope we get a little more Matt McGorry this season #majorcrush.

Roadies (Showtime, Series Premiere, June 26th) From Cameron Crowe (Almost Famous, Jerry Maguire) so I have high hopes. Plus Luke Wilson- those brothers man, how do they do it? Showtime calls this “an insider’s look at the reckless, romantic, funny and often poignant lives of a committed group of ‘roadies'”.

Suits (USA, Season 6, July 16th) Oh Suits, how I love thee.  You are such an unrealistic portrayal of a law firm, but whatever, y’all look ballin’. Plus *spoilerish* what’s going to happen to Mike?! Donna with the good hair and Rachel with the good suits, can we be friends?

Mr. Robot (USA, Season 2, July 16th) OH MAN. I am just finishing up Season 1 and can’t wait to see what twists and turns this next season have in store. Creator Sam Esmail directed all 10 episodes which should make this season consistent AF.

Vice Principals (HBO, Series Premiere, July 17th) I already know I’m going to laugh. Billy Murray, Danny McBride, Walton Goggins?! Just the concept alone, two VP’s fighting to take over the newly empty principal’s seat, has me thinking this is going to fill the Summer Heights High gap I’m missing in my life.

donut discriminate

IMG_1234HAPPY NATIONAL DONUT DAY!!!! I can’t think of a more fitting day to publish my first post. True life: I loved donuts so much as a kid, I chose Krispy Kreme as my sixth grade class-project stock to invest in-my sweet tooth’s a b*tch and guides more choices in my life than I’ll admit…Anyway, as a proud owner of not one but two of the same light pink donut sweatshirts (sent by 2 different friends for my birthday this year) it’s safe to say that I know my way around a donut shop.  So without further ado:  a (not so) ordinary guide to LA’s Donuts. I figured why have a “best of” when all of LA’s shops are perfect for different cravings

*I donut discriminate*

Nearly Sexual Experience: Sidecar Doughnuts their cinnamon crumb is my favorite donut right now. Plus they bake them fresh hourly, so you’re guaranteed it served warm (prime)!

Sweet and Salty Fix: Cofax has a honey sea salt donut that is so freakin’ good it should be illegal. On top of that their breakfast burritos are bomb as hell- add the avocado.

2AM Cravings: SK’s Donuts for real went there earlier tonight for my donut fix. It’s cash only if the order is under $10, which is usually the case if you’re going solo.IMG_2488IMG_9834

When You Want a Cronut, but can’t Fly to NYC on a Whim: Kettle Glazed closest thing to the OG.

Old-School Vibes: Randy’s not only is their signage iconic, but they do all the classics very well.

Can’t Decide if You are Craving Fried Chicken or Donuts: Birdies LA holy hell this place was made in my dreams.  It’s also open 24/7l so if you find yourself craving a late-night bite in DTLA go here. Immediately. They also are home of a 24 karat donut for a cool $100.

You Want Ice Cream with Your Donut: ICDC serious sugar fix here- house made ice cream + donuts.

Your IG Feed is Lacking a Good Donut Pic: California Donuts these guys are insta famous! PlusIMG_2484 you can order custom letter donuts for events.

Gourmet and Boozy Flavors are your Jam: Blue Star makes all their dough (it takes 18 hours) in house and always have out of the box flavors.

Keepin’ it Klassic: Krispy Kreme klassier than a Kardashian, the OG glazed gets me every time.

P.S. I still have some LA spots on my list to try: Donut Man, HuckleBerry, Sycamore Kitchen, and Donut Friend!

What are your fav LA donut spots?? (other cities happily welcome too!)
